Tips For Surviving a Kitchen Reno

Having your kitchen renovation finally come to fruition after a long time of dreams and hopes, wants vs needs and the special extra touches feels exhilarating and scary all at the same time.

With Easy Installations, we are here to help every step of the way. If you just need to freshen up your kitchen we have a fabulous design team; or need a reno to change it up we work in partnership with T-Square Construction (a renovation company) to get the job done smoothly.

Here are a few steps to help you plan and concur your kitchen reno from beginning to end:

  1. Budget: It’s the elephant in the room. No one wants to talk about it, but it’s the main contributing factor to get the job done right the first time. If you are clear about budget the designer will have a better understanding of what you are looking for and how to help. If your budget is not enough for everything you want, a good designer will let you know and maybe you want to take a little more time to save up!

  1. Know how you use your kitchen: When a kitchen designer comes to see you, you’ll have a list of dreams. But a good designer will help incorporate your dreams with function and beauty. Kitchens are the main hub of your house, and they must work!

  1. Design a temporary kitchen: With the Design phase out of the way, and your totally impressed with your designer, get ready for a few bumps. The best way to get through the install process is to create yourself a small cook space somewhere else (the garage if you have one). You’ll need a few key items from your kitchen before you pack it all away. Make a space to for a temporary kitchen with these items: Crock pot, toaster oven, microwave, coffee pot and kettle. If you can move your fridge over too that would be fantastic. Grab some disposable plates and cutlery, if you don’t want to do dishes in the bathroom. You can grab a few camping supplies if you have them and turn up your heat on the grill if the weather permits. If you have a freezer of pre-cook meals in containers that can go into the microwave and toaster oven.

  1. Accept “Friendcations” : if your friends offer to help or have you for a night over don’t brush them off, offer to order in pizza or sushi and bring some wine. It’s always nice to get away from the chaos at home, even for a night.

  1. The process: You’ve been knee deep in your reno for 2-3 weeks and you’re looking for the finish line but it doesn’t seem to be in sight yet. You’ve done most of the hard work, the base cabinets are in and the flooring is installed, the walls are painted and backsplash is going on. The template for the counter has been taken but it seems like nothing is happening. Don’t panic, it’s probably closer then it seems. Trust the process, it’s happened all before, but feel free to ask us about the progress.

  1. Keep your neighbors in the loop: If you are doing a reno as well as a kitchen install it’s hard for you but also on the neighbors, and you want to keep a good rapport with them. They might be around keeping an eye on the comings and goings when you’re at work and hear the noise and get dust from all the construction. But when you’re done you will want to invite them over to show off the space that you all so patiently waited for.

  1. Children and pet dilemmas: Renos can be hard on everyone. Upsetting the time that you normally serve dinner or the regular routine you have place in your home. Remember that including your kids in measuring or going away on vacation can help it seem not so bad.

Every kitchen seems to have its own personality, and watching it take shape can be quite rewarding. If you have the opportunity to take photos during the process, the memento at the end may seem even sweeter. If you have a small before book to look at well sitting in your new kitchen with friends and family the ooh’s and ahh’s won’t disappoint.
